Flipkart PLA (Product Listing Ads) are the pay-per-click ads that put an FSN in sponsored slots on search results, browse pages, the home page and product pages. You pay per click, you set the campaign as Smart ROI or CPC, and you judge it by ROI, which is attributed revenue divided by spend. This guide is the decision path from first campaign to weekly optimisation.
A PLA campaign is a set of FSNs, a daily budget, a targeting method and a bidding mode. When a shopper's search or browse matches your product, Flipkart runs an auction among eligible ads; your bid, the listing's expected conversion and its quality decide whether you show and where. You pay only when the shopper clicks. The order that follows, within the attribution window, is credited to the ad and reported as revenue, and revenue over spend is your ROI.
Blooprint's Flipkart ads guide walks through the panel screens and Blooprint's PLA versus PCA post explains where the two formats sit. This page is about the choices inside a PLA campaign.
Smart ROI campaigns ask for a target ROI and let Flipkart's system set bids to reach it. CPC campaigns ask for a bid per keyword or placement and leave the system out of it.
The rule that agency guides (ecomadvisor, globalwebsters) and Flipkart's own tutorials converge on: use CPC when the listing is new or slow, because Smart ROI needs sales history, reported as roughly five to ten sales a day, before it can bid sensibly. Switch to Smart ROI once the FSN has that history and you want the system to hold efficiency while you look elsewhere. If a Smart ROI campaign spends almost nothing, the target is set higher than the listing can deliver; lower it in steps of one before concluding the format does not work.
| CPC campaign | Smart ROI campaign | |
|---|---|---|
| You set | Bid per keyword and placement multipliers | Target ROI and budget |
| Best for | New listings, hero SKUs, sale-day visibility | Established FSNs with steady sales |
| Failure mode | Over-bidding, wasted clicks | Under-spending when the target is too high |
| Control | Full | Budget and target only |
Automatic targeting lets Flipkart match the FSN to searches and browse pages from the listing's title, category and attributes. Keyword targeting lets you add up to 200 exact or phrase keywords and up to 200 negatives, as paxcom and harshitmaggo document, and works in both CPC and Smart ROI modes.
Run automatic first for two weeks on a new FSN to harvest the search term report, then move the converting terms into a keyword campaign with exact match and their own bids, and add the non-converting terms as negatives in both. Keep the automatic campaign running at a lower budget as a discovery engine.
A keyword bid is the most you pay for a click on that term; the actual CPC is usually lower. The bid you can afford comes from price, margin and conversion rate, not from the suggested bid. Worked example: selling price ₹799, margin before ads 30%, so ₹240 of contribution per order. At a 4% conversion rate, 25 clicks make one order, so the break-even CPC is ₹240 / 25 = ₹9.60. Bid ₹7 to leave room for profit and rise only if impressions are missing.
Doing that across 30 campaigns and 400 keywords by hand is a full day. BlooprintAI puts every Flipkart keyword, FSN and placement in filterable tables, and lets you create PLA campaigns from one CSV and change bids, budgets and placement multipliers in bulk, with a summary before the change and a log after it.
Sort by spend; add negatives for terms with 30+ clicks and no orders; promote converting terms to exact keywords.
Compare each FSN's ROI to break-even (1 / margin). Cut bids or pause FSNs below it; add budget to FSNs above it that are running out.
Shift multipliers towards the slot with the better ROI.
Campaigns spending 100% of budget by afternoon with ROI above target get more budget; campaigns spending 20% get bid or listing attention.

CPC. Smart ROI needs sales history on the FSN, reported by agency guides as roughly five to ten sales a day, before it bids well. Start with CPC, and move to Smart ROI once the listing converts steadily.
Up to 200 keywords in exact or phrase match and up to 200 negative keywords per campaign, according to paxcom and harshitmaggo. Keyword targeting works in both CPC and Smart ROI campaigns.
From price, margin and conversion rate. Contribution per order divided by clicks per order is the break-even CPC; bid below it. For ₹240 contribution and a 4% conversion rate the break-even CPC is ₹9.60.
Common causes: bid below the auction floor, Smart ROI target too high, listing out of stock or ineligible, budget exhausted, or campaign end date passed. Check them in that order.
Yes, and it is often the only traffic lever for the first weeks. Use CPC with a modest bid, automatic targeting, and fix any clicks-without-orders problem on the listing before raising bids.
