Start Meesho ads on a catalogue once it has 20 to 30 organic orders, a return rate you have measured, and at least ₹60 to ₹80 of margin per delivered order. Before that, the free levers (price, photos, size chart, category, stock) move sales more than a ₹2 click, because Meesho ranks on conversion and an ad only buys the click.
Meesho's search and feed rank catalogues on conversion, price competitiveness and delivery performance. An ad puts a catalogue in front of a shopper; it does not make the shopper buy. If the catalogue converts at 2% because the photos are supplier-stock images and the size chart is missing, an ad buys fifty clicks for one order, and at ₹2 a click that order cost ₹100 of ads on a ₹349 product. The same catalogue at 5% conversion costs ₹40 per order. Ads amplify the listing you already have.
That is why the counter-demand is so large. Searches for 'how to get orders on Meesho without ads' dwarf searches for how to run them, and the honest answer is that for a new catalogue the organic levers are both free and stronger.
Twenty to thirty orders without ads shows the listing converts and gives a conversion baseline to compare the campaign against.
This catalogue's, not the account average. A 12% return product and a 35% return product at the same price need different targets, and the second may not be worth advertising at all.
Below that, returns plus ad cost per order leave nothing. Meesho charges no commission on most categories, but forward shipping on every order and reverse shipping on every return come off the top.
Ads that push a catalogue out of stock waste the spend and the ranking gain that came with it.
Selling price ₹349, product and packing ₹150, forward shipping ₹77 with GST, CPC ₹2. The only thing that changes between the columns is what the organic phase taught you.
| Week 2, no history | Month 3, 30 organic orders | |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion rate | Unknown; assume 2% | Measured at 5% after photo and size-chart fixes |
| Ad cost per order | ₹100 | ₹40 |
| Return rate | Unknown | Measured at 20% |
| Margin per delivered order | ₹122 | ₹122 |
| Net per ad order after returns and ads | Loss of about ₹48 | Profit of about ₹12 |
Both columns are the same product. The month-3 column is profitable only because the organic phase fixed conversion and revealed the return rate, which set the ROI target correctly. Blooprint's Meesho ads guide has the full arithmetic; the CPO glossary entry and the Meesho ROI calculator on this site do the sums for your numbers.
A short, capped burst, ₹100 a day for a week, can get the first orders and reviews that organic ranking needs. Accept that the burst itself will not be profitable, cap it, and stop. Do not confuse it with a sustained campaign. Free promotional credit, where Meesho has granted it, is the natural budget for this burst.
Once ads are on, Meesho's ROI Plus mode lets you set a minimum ROI, and the system spends only where it expects to hit it. The target is break-even ROI plus the profit you want, and break-even is one divided by margin before ads. The ROI Plus guide on this site covers the routine.

Yes, and most suppliers do. Meesho ranks on conversion, price and delivery performance, so real photos, a complete size chart, the right category, a competitive price and daily dispatch move sales more for a new catalogue than a ₹2 click.
Only at a low cost per order and a low return rate. At ₹2 a click and 5% conversion the ad costs ₹40 per order and the catalogue clears about ₹12 after a 20% return rate; at 2% conversion or 30% returns it loses money.
Only as a capped burst, ₹100 a day for a week, to get first orders and reviews, accepting that the burst will not be profitable. Sustained ads belong on catalogues with organic history.
Break-even ROI plus the profit you want. Break-even is one divided by margin before ads, so a 20% margin gives ROI 5 and a target of 6 leaves one point of profit.
