Why is Amazon charging ₹50 per click on a ₹10 bid?

Amazon charges more than your keyword bid when placement adjustments and dynamic bidding are applied on top of it. A 400% top-of-search adjustment turns a ₹10 bid into a ₹50 maximum bid, and Dynamic bids, up and down can add up to another 100% for top of search. This is the explanation an Amazon staff member gave in the Seller Central India thread on exactly this question.

The thread that explains it

A seller on the Seller Central India forum posted Amazon Cost Per Click is 3 to 5 times higher than Bid Amount, with a ₹10 bid producing ₹50 clicks. The reply from Amazon staff pointed to two settings: the campaign's adjust bids by placement figure, which was 400% for top of search, and the bidding strategy. The bid you type is the base; the multipliers make the real bid.

Blooprint's Amazon ads budget rules and bidding guide covers the settings in general. This page works the arithmetic and the fix.

How the real bid is calculated

Amazon's help page describes two layers on top of the keyword bid. Placement adjustments raise the bid for a given placement by a percentage you set, from 0 to 900%. Dynamic bidding then adjusts that figure per auction: down only lowers it by up to 100% when a sale is unlikely; up and down also raises it, by up to 100% for top of search and 50% for other placements, when a sale is likely.

SettingBase bidAfter placement adjustmentAfter up and down (max)
No adjustment, fixed bids₹10₹10₹10
Top of search +50%, down only₹10₹15₹15 (can only go lower)
Top of search +100%, up and down₹10₹20₹40
Top of search +400%, up and down₹10₹50₹100
Product pages +100%, up and down₹10₹20₹30

Amazon charges the second-price auction amount up to that maximum, so you will not always pay the full figure, but with a 400% adjustment a ₹50 click is normal, and ₹100 is possible with up and down bidding. The forum seller was not being overcharged; the campaign was set to bid that much.

Why sellers end up with high multipliers

  • A sale-event setting that was never reversed.
  • Copying a strategy from a US blog that assumes a low base bid.
  • Raising the multiplier to win top of search after raising the base bid too, so the two stack.
  • Auto campaigns with up and down bidding, where Amazon's prediction has more freedom.
  • A tool or agency set it and the seller never saw the setting.

How to fix it

  1. Find the campaigns with adjustments

Open each campaign's settings and note the top of search and product page percentages. In BlooprintAI, the placement view lists the multipliers for every campaign in one table.

  2. Decide what the top slot is worth

Look at the placement report. If top of search converts at twice the rate of rest of search, a multiplier up to 100% can pay. If it does not, set it to 0.

  3. Lower the multiplier before the bid

Cutting a 400% adjustment to 50% brings the ₹50 maximum to ₹15 without touching keyword bids elsewhere.

  4. Choose the bidding strategy deliberately

Down only is the safe default. Use up and down only on campaigns with strong conversion history, where Amazon's prediction has data to work with.

  5. Watch CPC for three days

Placement changes take effect on the next auctions. Compare CPC by placement before and after.

Using multipliers well

Multipliers are not a mistake; they are a way to bid differently by placement without separate campaigns. The clean pattern is a modest base bid, a top-of-search adjustment sized from the placement report, and down only bidding. If you want to test up and down, do it on one campaign and compare CPC and ACoS by placement after a week.

Across many campaigns, changing multipliers one by one is slow. BlooprintAI lets you select campaigns, set placement adjustments in bulk, review the summary and apply, with a log to reverse it. It will not change your multipliers on its own. The bid calculator helps set the base bid from target ACoS and conversion rate so the multiplier is the only variable.

Frequently asked questions

Can Amazon charge more than my bid?

Not more than your adjusted bid. Placement adjustments and up and down bidding raise the maximum above the keyword bid you typed, so ₹10 can become ₹50 or more.

What is the maximum placement adjustment on Amazon?

900% for top of search and product pages, according to the Amazon Ads help page. A 900% adjustment makes a ₹10 bid a ₹100 maximum.

How much does dynamic up and down bidding raise bids?

Up to 100% for top of search and 50% for other placements, applied after placement adjustments.

Should I use down only or up and down?

Down only is the safe default and cannot exceed your adjusted bid. Use up and down only where conversion history is strong and you have checked the placement report.

Does BlooprintAI change placement multipliers automatically?

No. It shows every campaign's multipliers and placement performance in one table and applies your changes in bulk after a review step.
