Amazon ads conversion rate: the formula, what is normal and how to raise it

Conversion rate on Amazon ads is orders divided by clicks, multiplied by 100, so 24 orders from 300 clicks is 8%. Amazon calls it CVR in some reports. There is no verified Amazon India benchmark; the useful comparison is your listing's own organic conversion rate from the Business Reports page, and paid CVR far below it means the campaign is sending the wrong traffic.

Formula
CVR = orders divided by clicks x 100
Example
24 orders from 300 clicks = 8%

The formula, and the two places it lives

In Campaign Manager, conversion rate is orders divided by clicks over the date range. In Seller Central Business Reports the equivalent for all traffic is unit session percentage, which uses units and sessions rather than orders and clicks. They are not identical, but they are close enough that a paid CVR of 3% against an organic 9% on the same ASIN is a clear signal.

Remember the attribution lag. Seller accounts get sales credited up to seven days after a click, so the conversion rate for the last three days is always understated. Judge CVR on a window that ended at least a week ago.

Why paid CVR is usually below organic

  • Organic clicks come from shoppers who chose your listing among many; ad clicks include shoppers who clicked the first thing they saw.
  • Broad and auto campaigns bring searches that are only loosely related to the product.
  • Product page placements reach shoppers who were looking at something else.
  • Ads keep serving during hours and days when your category converts poorly, and there is no dayparting on Amazon India; our dayparting glossary entry explains the workaround.

What is normal on Amazon India

We could not verify a published conversion rate benchmark for Amazon India from Amazon or from any Indian source that shows its data, and we will not quote US figures as if they applied. The Seller Central India forum thread My products are getting clicks but no sales conversions, with almost 700 views, is the typical case: the replies focus on price, reviews and validating demand, not on a benchmark. Our benchmarks guide lists the ACoS and CPC ranges that do have sources.

The practical benchmark is your own organic rate. Pull unit session percentage for the ASIN, then compare each keyword's paid CVR with it. Keywords at or above the organic rate are your best traffic and can take a higher bid; keywords well below it need negatives or a lower bid.

What to fix when conversion rate drops

  1. Check whether it dropped everywhere

If organic CVR fell too, the cause is the listing or the market: a price change, a new competitor, a run of bad reviews, stock in a slow fulfilment centre. Fix that, not the campaign.

  2. Look for new search terms

If only paid CVR fell, the search term report usually shows a new broad or auto match pulling irrelevant clicks. Negate it. Blooprint's negative keywords guide covers the method.

  3. Check the placement mix

A placement bid change can shift spend to product pages, where CVR is lowest. The placement report shows the split.

  4. Check the Buy Box

If you lost the featured offer for part of the period, clicks landed on a page where another seller took the sale. Our ineligible guide covers this.

  5. Check the sale-event hangover

CVR falls in the week after the Great Indian Festival as shoppers stop buying. Wait a week before reacting.

How conversion rate sets your bid

The bid you can afford is price times conversion rate times target ACoS. A ₹999 product converting at 8% with a 25% target ACoS supports a bid of about ₹20; the same product at 3% supports about ₹7.50. This is why CVR is the number to improve before raising bids: every point of conversion rate raises the bid you can afford on every keyword. Our bid calculator does the arithmetic per keyword.

Reading CVR across an account

BlooprintAI lists every keyword and target for Amazon India with CVR, CTR, CPC and ACoS in one table, so you can filter for clicks above a threshold and CVR below your organic rate and see the search terms behind each row. Bids for the rows you pick are lowered in one action after a summary, and the change is logged. It suggests; you apply.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate conversion rate on Amazon ads?

Orders divided by clicks, multiplied by 100. 24 orders from 300 clicks is 8%. Campaign Manager shows it per campaign, ad group, keyword and search term.

What is a good conversion rate for Amazon ads in India?

No verified benchmark exists. Compare paid CVR with the ASIN's unit session percentage in Business Reports; paid traffic at or above the organic rate is good, well below it means the wrong searches.

Why is my Amazon ads conversion rate lower than my organic rate?

Ad clicks include loosely related searches from broad and auto targeting and product page placements. Negatives and placement bids close most of the gap.

Why did my conversion rate suddenly drop?

Check whether organic dropped too. If yes, it is price, reviews, stock or a competitor. If only paid fell, look for a new search term or a placement shift in the reports.

Does conversion rate affect my Amazon CPC?

Amazon ranks ads on bid and expected conversion, so a keyword with a strong conversion history can win the same position at a lower bid than a new one.
