What is keyword harvesting?

Keyword harvesting is the routine of taking search terms that have converted in an auto, broad or phrase campaign and adding them as exact match keywords in a manual campaign, where each gets its own bid. The same term is then added as a negative in the source campaign. On Amazon and Flipkart it is how discovery campaigns turn into controlled, profitable ones.

Source
Auto, broad and phrase campaigns
Destination
Manual exact match campaign (Flipkart: keyword campaign, exact)
Usual threshold
2 or more orders at an ACoS below target
Worked example
Term at ₹6 shared bid, 12.5% CVR, moved to exact at ₹11

How keyword harvesting works

  1. Download the search term report

Take two to four weeks of data from auto, broad and phrase campaigns so each term has enough clicks to judge.

  2. Filter for winners

Keep search terms with at least two orders and an ACoS below your target, or a conversion rate above the product average.

  3. Add them as exact keywords

Put them in a manual exact campaign with a bid based on each term's own conversion rate.

  4. Negate them at the source

Add each harvested term as negative exact in the campaign it came from, so the exact keyword wins the traffic.

  5. Repeat on a schedule

Weekly or fortnightly; discovery campaigns keep producing new terms.

A worked example

An auto campaign for a ₹999 pressure cooker gasket runs at a ₹6 bid. In three weeks the search term report shows gasket for 5 litre cooker took 48 clicks and 6 orders, a 12.5% conversion rate, and ₹288 of spend: ACoS ₹288 / ₹5,994 = 4.8%. Inside the auto campaign it can only ever get the ₹6 group bid and competes with everything else for budget.

Harvested as an exact keyword, the term can be bid from its own numbers. With a 30% target ACoS, the most a click can cost is ₹999 x 12.5% x 30% = ₹37. A starting bid of ₹11 is conservative and still nearly double the old one, which usually wins more impressions on a term that already sells. The auto campaign gets the term as negative exact so the two do not compete.

On Flipkart the same routine runs from automatic PLA campaigns into keyword campaigns, using exact keywords and excluded keywords.

Why it matters

Harvesting is what makes an account improve over time. Discovery campaigns find terms cheaply; exact campaigns price them properly. Without harvesting, the best terms stay trapped under a low shared bid while poor terms under the same bid keep spending. Sellers who never harvest usually see ACoS drift up as auto campaigns widen.

It is also the most repetitive job in PPC, which is why tools that filter search terms by orders and ACoS across every campaign at once save the most time here.

Frequently asked questions

What does keyword harvesting mean?

It means moving search terms that have converted in auto, broad or phrase campaigns into their own exact match keywords in a manual campaign, then adding them as negatives where they came from.

How often should I harvest keywords?

Weekly for high-spend accounts, fortnightly for smaller ones. Each term needs enough clicks to judge, usually at least two orders.

Why add the harvested term as a negative in the source campaign?

So the source campaign stops bidding on it. Otherwise two of your campaigns compete for the same search, and the lower shared bid can win traffic you meant to price separately.

Does keyword harvesting work on Flipkart?

Yes. Take search terms from automatic PLA campaigns via Flipkart's search term report and add them as exact keywords in a keyword campaign, excluding them from the automatic one where possible.
