Is Amazon PPC worth it? A margin-based way to decide

Amazon PPC is worth it when two things are true: the ACoS on your ads stays below your break-even ACoS, and ads add sales rather than only replacing organic ones. The first you can check with a calculator in five minutes. The second needs a month of data and a look at TACoS. If either fails and cannot be fixed, the honest answer is no, or not yet.

Test 1
ACoS below break-even ACoS
Test 2
Total sales rise with ads; TACoS stable or falling
Break-even example
₹999 product, about 42% (eVanik worked example)
Minimum spend for a verdict
About ₹15,000 a month (SW Cybernetics, agency view)

Why sellers ask

The question comes up constantly on the Seller Central India forum. One thread titled 'Amazon Sponsored Ads, is it cost effective' is from a seller running ACoS of 50 to 60%. Another, 'When I paused my campaign order is stopped', drew 159 views from sellers who found that orders fell away when ads stopped. On Quora the question is 'Are Amazon sponsored ads expensive? Are they effective?'. Those are two different worries: ads that cost more than they earn, and a business that cannot sell without them.

Test 1: is each ad sale profitable?

Break-even ACoS is your margin before ad costs as a percentage of price: price minus referral fee, fulfilment fee, closing fee, product cost and GST, divided by price. eVanik's worked example for a ₹999 product lands at about 42%. If your ACoS on a campaign is above that number, every ad sale on that campaign loses money.

Run this per product, not per account. A seller with an account ACoS of 35% can have one product at 20% and another at 70%. The first is worth advertising; the second needs fixing or pausing. Our break-even ACoS calculator does the arithmetic.

Test 2: do ads add sales or just move them?

An ad click on a search where you already rank first organically may simply take a sale you would have had for free. The check is TACoS, ad spend divided by total sales. If ad spend rises and total sales rise faster, TACoS falls and the ads are adding sales. If total sales stay flat while ad spend rises, ads are replacing organic orders.

The forum seller whose orders stopped when ads paused is a special case. For a new or low-ranking listing, ads are how shoppers find you at all; switching them off removes visibility until organic rank catches up. That does not make ads unprofitable, but it does mean the pause test is not a fair test for a new product.

When Amazon PPC is not worth it

  • Break-even ACoS under about 15%, typical of low-price items with high fulfilment fees. No realistic ACoS clears it.
  • Listings with few reviews, weak images or a price well above competitors. Ads buy clicks that do not convert. Fix the listing first.
  • Budgets too small to learn. SW Cybernetics, an agency, puts the floor at about ₹15,000 a month and says below ₹300 a day you rarely get usable data. Their number is an agency view, but the logic holds: ten clicks a day tells you little.
  • Products that regularly lose the Buy Box. The ad stops serving whenever the Buy Box goes, and the data becomes noise.

When it clearly is worth it

Products with break-even ACoS above 30%, decent reviews and a competitive price usually find campaigns that clear the bar within a month. Gonukkad's cross-marketplace comparison quotes Amazon CPCs of ₹10 to ₹30 and ROAS of 4 to 6x, which is an ACoS of roughly 17 to 25%, well inside that range. Launches are also worth it at a higher ACoS for a limited time, because the sales build rank; the forum reply that launches tolerate 60% ACoS is common advice, provided there is an end date.

Whether it stays worth it depends on keeping up: negating wasted search terms weekly, moving bids on the keywords that matter. That is where software helps. BlooprintAI filters every keyword by ACoS against your break-even and lets you cut or raise bids in bulk after a review step. It does not decide for you and does not bid automatically; it makes the weekly check quick enough to actually happen.

Frequently asked questions

Is Amazon PPC worth it for small sellers in India?

Yes, if the product's break-even ACoS is comfortably above 25% and the listing converts. Start with one or two hero products and a budget that buys at least ten to twenty clicks a day, rather than spreading a small budget thinly.

What ACoS makes Amazon ads worth it?

Any ACoS below your break-even ACoS, which is your margin before ad costs as a share of price. For most Indian sellers that falls between 25 and 45%, but calculate your own.

Why do my Amazon orders stop when I pause ads?

On a new or low-ranking listing, ads provide most of the visibility. Organic rank takes time to build, so pausing removes the traffic. This means the listing depends on ads, not that ads are unprofitable.

How long before I know if Amazon PPC is working?

About a month. The first two weeks are learning, and the 7-day attribution window means the last week's numbers are still filling in. Judge on a full month's data per product.

Is it better to hire an agency or use software for Amazon PPC?

Agencies suit sellers who want to hand the work off; software suits those who want to keep control and save time. Our agency versus software comparison lays out the costs in rupees.
