Amazon DSP vs PPC in India: what DSP advertising is and when a seller should care

Amazon DSP, the demand-side platform, buys display and video ad impressions on Amazon and across other websites and apps using Amazon's shopping data, billed per thousand impressions, usually through a managed account with a spend commitment. PPC on Amazon means the Sponsored Products, Brands and Display campaigns billed per click. For almost every Indian seller, PPC comes first and DSP only makes sense once search is saturated.

Amazon DSP also means Delivery Service Partner

Two things called Amazon DSP

Search for amazon dsp india and most results are about the Delivery Service Partner programme, the scheme for running a delivery fleet. This page is about the other one: the demand-side platform, Amazon's tool for buying display and video advertising programmatically. If you were looking for delivery, this is not it.

The advertising DSP is not a bigger version of Sponsored ads. It is a different product, sold differently, measured differently and priced differently, which is why the comparison matters before anyone quotes you for it.

What DSP is for

DSP reaches shoppers who are not searching. It can show a video to people who bought a related category in the last month, or a banner on a news site to people who viewed your product and left. Its strength is reach and audience data; its weakness is that most of what it buys is impressions that never turn into a click, so the return shows up in brand searches and detail page views over weeks, not in tomorrow's ACoS.

That makes it a tool for brands with a proven listing, an established Sponsored ads programme and a budget large enough to meet the commitment. Amazon and its agency partners set the minimum, and it is not published for India; ask before you plan.

When a seller in India should not touch DSP

  • Sponsored Products is not yet spending its budget profitably. Fix search first; it is cheaper per order and gives you the data DSP needs.
  • One or two ASINs with few reviews. DSP sends cold traffic to a page that does not convert.
  • Margin under 30%. Impression-based buying at a CPM that is not disclosed until the plan is built is a poor fit for thin margins.
  • You cannot commit a fixed monthly amount. PPC can be turned down to zero tomorrow; DSP is a plan.

When it starts to make sense

  1. Search is saturated

Your Sponsored campaigns win most of the top-of-search impressions on your core terms and raising bids no longer adds orders.

  2. You have Brand Registry, a Store and video

DSP creatives need brand assets, and a Store gives the ad somewhere to land.

  3. Retargeting in Sponsored Display already works

If views remarketing converts on Sponsored Display, DSP extends the same idea off Amazon with more audience control.

  4. You can measure over weeks

Set a reach and new-to-brand goal, not an ACoS target, and review monthly.

What software does and does not cover

BlooprintAI manages the Sponsored side for Amazon India and UAE: bulk creation of Sponsored Products, Brands and Display campaigns, bulk bid and budget changes with a summary first, and one dashboard for ACoS and ROAS. It does not manage DSP, which runs through Amazon's own console or an agency. If you are weighing DSP because your Sponsored campaigns have become too many to manage, that is a PPC tooling problem, and a cheaper one to solve.

Frequently asked questions

What is Amazon DSP in advertising?

The demand-side platform: Amazon's tool for buying display and video ad impressions on Amazon and other sites and apps using Amazon's shopping data, billed per thousand impressions. Not the Delivery Service Partner programme.

What is the difference between Amazon DSP and PPC?

PPC (Sponsored ads) shows product ads to shoppers who search and bills per click. DSP shows display and video to audiences whether or not they search and bills per impression, usually through a managed account.

Is Amazon DSP available in India?

Yes, through Amazon Ads account teams and agency partners. The spend commitment for a managed account is not published for India; ask Amazon or an agency for the current figure.

Is Sponsored Display the same as DSP?

No. Sponsored Display is self-service, product-ad based and billed per click or vCPM, with no minimum. DSP is a separate platform with display and video creatives and a spend commitment.

Should a new Amazon seller use DSP?

No. Start with Sponsored Products, add Sponsored Brands and Display with Brand Registry, and consider DSP only when search is saturated and you can commit a monthly budget.
